The Department of Homeland Security has created a good checklist for this very reason. It divides the long checklist into three temporal categories that consider conditions before, during and after the storm.
Before The Storm The first section of their hurricane preparedness checklist concerns general preparations that are most likely in place through the hurricane season. Some points are more obvious than others.
Most people know that they should keep a supply of batteries available as well as a supply of cash. However, the departments checklist also reminds people to keep their gas tanks half-full at all times, since they will not be able to fill it if a storm comes upon them suddenly.
People are also reminded to test run their generators each month, whether a storm seems likely or not. As storm season begins, people should also prepare their homes by boarding up windows, clearing debris from around their houses and securing all equipment that cannot be moved.
It is also important, for insurance reasons, to prepare a list of all important items in the house in case they are lost during the storm. Finally, as a storm approaches, homeowners should turn off all their gas appliances.
During The Storm Before taking refuge in an interior room or closet, people need to take care of a few details as the storm comes near. All interior doors should be shut, as well as all curtains and blinds.
Any refrigerators or freezers should be turned to the lowest setting and left closed. Finally, they should take a radio or a portable television into hiding with them and continue to listen as long as possible to the local emergency broadcast station.
After The Storm Once the storm has passed, danger remains. Fires can break out even if someone has taken all precautions.
This is why people emerging from the aftermath of a storm should carry fire extinguishers. They should move about very carefully because the ground will be extremely moist and debris may make even simple walking a treacherous undertaking.
The very first thing to do is treat any injuries that may have occurred to family members or neighbors. When they have dealt with those issues, people should consider the status of their homes.
If the roof appears damaged inside or outside, they should exit the house or not return inside if they have left. It may be unstable.
The odor of gas is a sign that people should carefully evacuate the area entirely. Maintaining a hurricane preparedness checklist will help people stay calm during this stressful time.
Knowing that they made these lists when their minds were collected will let them trust in their guidance. With personal safety assured, damage to houses and other structures will seem less important.
